Weekend Project: Make Granola


Granola is a healthy and delicious snack. Depending on the brand that you purchase in the store, it can be filled with preservatives and extra sugar. That’s why it can be a fun family activity to make at home. Granola tastes great when sprinkled on plain or vanilla yogurt. It can also be packaged in a pretty sack with a bow to surprise someone special.


Makes 6 servings

2 cups oatmeal (not quick oats)

¼ cup canola oil

1/3 cup brown sugar

2 tablespoons honey

2 tablespoons maple syrup

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla

½ cup raisins (optional)

¼ cup almonds, slivered (optional)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Combine oatmeal, canola oil, brown sugar, honey, maple syrup, cinnamon, and vanilla in bowl and stir to combine. Break up any clumps of brown sugar.

Pour mixture onto baking sheet. Bake in oven for about 20 minutes, stirring every five minutes. Be careful not to burn.

Add raisins and almonds.

Pour onto wax paper to cool.

After the mixture bakes, you can add any add-ins you can imagine like dried cherries, puffed rice cereal, toasted coconut or chocolate chips.
