Hello, September! Back-to-School Tips and a Fun Fall Recipe


This week, we wave goodbye to August and hello to the school year! Here are some tips for kids who pack their own school lunches along with a recipe for a fun fall snack.

Tips for packing lunches

Dedicate one drawer in your refrigerator to keeping supplies for lunch like yogurt, string cheese and juice boxes handy.

Wipe out your lunchbox when you get home, and store it in the same place in your kitchen. If you always forget your lunchbox at school, try using recyclable paper bags.

Make a reminder list of lunch ideas and tape it inside a cupboard to keep your lunch from getting boring.

Use reusable containers whenever possible, and take them home every night to wash them.

Pack seasonal produce to munch on, and make your own fun snacks to put in your lunch. Keep reading for a delicious recipe for apple chips.

Apple chips

Makes 2-4 servings.


  • ¼ cup lemon juice 
  • ¼ cup water 
  • 2 Red Delicious apples 
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar 
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon 
  • ¼ teaspoon salt 
  • Parchment paper


Preheat oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix lemon juice and water in a bowl, and stir in sugar until it dissolves. Carefully core apples (ask an adult for help). Leave skin on apples. With your adult helper, cut apples into slices about as thick as a quarter. Place slices in bowl with lemon juice, water and sugar.

Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Place apple slices on baking sheets in a single layer. Sprinkle with cinnamon and salt. Bake for 3-4 hours, checking every 30 minutes until apples are dry and crisp. Baking time depends on the thickness of your apple slices. Store in an air-tight container. Enjoy!
