Celebrate Taco Day with an Easy Taco Seasoning Recipe


Did you know that October 4 is Taco Day? Well, let's taco-bout how to celebrate! (Sorry, we couldn't resist.)

Jazz up your basic taco recipe by using up your spices and skipping the envelopes of seasoning sold at the grocery store. You can adjust spiciness by adding more or less chili powder.

Out-of-this-world taco seasoning recipe

Makes enough for 3 taco dinners.

What you need

  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon flour
  • glass jar with lid
  • tape
  • marker


Add all ingredients to a clean, dry jar. Add lid and shake to combine. On a small piece of tape, note today’s date and add the date six months from now. Use up your spice mix before then.

To use your seasoning, brown one pound of ground beef in a skillet. An adult can drain off fat. Add 2 tablespoons of your mix and ¼ cup water, and let beef simmer for about 5 minutes.

Making vegetarian tacos? Sprinkle your mix and a little water into your favorite taco fillings (we recommend sweet potatoes, veggies, and black beans) while cooking and enjoy!
